In November 1985, Charan Singh suffered from a brain stroke that incapacitated him for the next 18 months. He passed away on 29 May 1987, 7 months short of 85. He was cremated at Kisan Ghat next to the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi.
On Singh’s passing, various eminent leaders paid tributes to the departed leader. The Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi visited the residence and laid a wreath on the body. Mr. Gandhi consoled the bereaved family members. The former president, Mr. Sanjeeva Reddy, went to the residence of Mr. Charan Singh and offered floral tributes. The Lok Sabha speaker, Mr. Balram Jakhar, prominent among the visitors were union ministers, opposition leaders and members of parliament.
