The matter of whether or not to hold fresh elections was far from settled in UP. Congress under C.B. Gupta and the SVD were renewing their claims as the holders of clear majorities. The latter in particular did not want fresh elections and claimed that their majority would be proven on the floor of the house. However, the governor did not pay heed to these suggestions and dissolved the assembly, announcing fresh elections in the coming year.
