Congress (R) and BKD go head to head on portfolio distribution

21 Mar 1970

The peace among the two parties immediately proved precarious. The Congress (R) continually behaved in a loutish manner and cornered the BKD into giving up portfolios and seats in favour of their ministers. Despite assenting to policy changes in the Cabinet, the Congress (R) would castigate them in the media. The first trial of strength for the coalition came only a month into his tenure: the leader of the opposition, Girdhari Lal of the Congress (O) initiated a no-confidence motion against Charan Singh on March 21 due to his “failure to deliver” on the abolition of land revenue on smallholdings and the abolition of profession tax. The motion was defeated. But this was the far from the last of troubles for the BKD government.
