CCS gives up CMship for TN Singh

Oct 1970

In UP, a new Samyukta Vidhayak Dal came up after Charan Singh’s dismissal by the Governor. The major constituents in this alliance were the BKD, Congress (O), Jan Sangh, SSP and Swatantra, which together boasted 257 MLAs. Charan Singh in his “Story of New Congress—BKD relations" noted how Mrs. Gandhi’s bloc was propelled by a resounding victory in Kerala and sought to “annex” the entire country to capture absolute power. This move was tempered by the SVD’s quick manoeuvres in assenting to T.N. Singh’s leadership (he was a member of the Congress (O)), who was sworn in on October 18, thus ending President’s rule in only 17 days. Charan Singh essentially ceded power to keep the Congress (R) from capturing another state in the union, and did not want Chief Ministership again. As he’d earlier noted, Chief-Ministership was never the raison of the party he helmed.
