Charan Singh resigns as the Chief Minister

17 Feb 1968

With little hope of reconciliation among the SVD constituents, Charan Singh finally resigns as the Chief Minister and requests the Governor to hold immediate mid-term elections. In a note released from his office he avers that a “limit has been reached” in the “adjustment with principles” any coalition requires. He blames no one. The SVD is said to have made attempts to bring him back within the coalition’s fold, but these were all in vain. This was typical of his behaviour which had continued from his time in Congress: matters of principle were so central to him that he would not brook any suggestions otherwise. He always carried his resignation on his person, and would not hesitate tendering it if expected to make any compromise with his cultivated moral scruples. By the end of the month UP was placed under President’s rule, making it the third non-Congress government to fall in that year alone, along with Haryana and West Bengal.
