Singh takes up the work of ideologically streamlining the BKD, breaks with the Bengal unit over their support of the CPI(M)

June 1968

The hopes to create a strong party also required wrangling with certain elements within the BKD: Charan Singh found himself in constant disagreement with Mahamaya Babu, the leader of the national executive, and the leader of the Bengal chapter, Ajoy Mukherjee. The Bengal camp had — despite warnings — retained connections with the CPI(M) and Jyoti Basu, which the party found objectionable. It was becoming clear the BKD could only work by parting ways with those willing to ally with the Communists and other fractious elements. Ajoy Mukherjee’s resignation was accepted in July and the Bengal unit was also reorganised. Singh was strengthening his ideological and political hold on the BKD.
