In this note on the facts and fallacies of Lok Dal in Bihar, Prof Subhash Chandra writes that Charan Singh’s Lok Dal has truncated the socialists in Bihar, as apparent from the large turnouts at his gatherings. A decade ago, Rammanohar Lohia with his dedicated band of socialists and radical socio-economic ideas had attracted the masses, but his death had left a void. The greatest drawback of the socialists was that when the opportunity of action descended, they displayed remarkable hesitation and lack of cohesive action. Mandal Commission, at their hands, ended up being a tool of propaganda.
