Meeting of the BKD national executive and discussions on the Bangladeshi crisis

June 1971

The matters of pressing concern at the BKD national executive give us a unique glimpse into the direction politics was taking in the country: and a timely reminder that the party did not view itself as one limited merely to a single state. There is worry expressed at the central government’s handling of the Bangladeshi crisis which was enabling more and more refugees to enter the country with nowhere to go. It rejected proposals on the imposition of income tax on agricultural income, the spate of defections and the illegal dissolution of the Punjab Assembly by its governor at the behest of the PM. The proceedings are reproduced here.
