Kamlapathi Tripathi had thrown his hat in the ring for the chief-ministership, but on Indira Gandhi’s intervention this offer was withdrawn. On February 15, the AICC treasurer who had played a key role in bringing about an entente between the BKD and Congress (R), announced a single party government will be formed headed by Charan Singh, with the Congress (R) providing support from the outside. This gave them the majority of 240 seats out of 425. Charan Singh was sworn in as the UP Chief minister for the second time in three years on February 17, 1970.
