A rising spiral of prices in almost all commodities of daily use dampens the festival season. Prices have jumped from 5 to 30 percent in most cases and as much as 70 percent in some. Government control has brought down the price of sugar. The government is determined to take stringent measures to curb the rising prices. Preventive detention of black marketers and hoarders may be included in the Essential Commodities Act.
