A new government for Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow is sworn in on May 1, 1967 in Lucknow. As the Chief Minister, Charan Singh, leader of the Sanyukta Vidyayak Dal, leads a coalition of the Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Jana Sangh, Samyukt Socialist Party, Communists, Swantantra Party, Praja Socialist Party, Republicans and Independents. This is the first non-Congress ministry in Uttar Pradesh since independence. It starts the rise of the OBCs as a political force in North India. The SVD government disintegrates in 1968 due to differences within the constituents.
