Former Prime Minister, Home Minister and two-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Chaudhary Charan Singh has become the 12th Bharat Ratna of UP. He is the sixth leader from UP to get Bharat Ratna after becoming PM. Singh is considered as the biggest champion of peasants’ rights and a spokesman for the village. This award is an honour for the countryside and the farming community, who considered Singh to be their voice due to the alternative model of development that he presented. Chaudhary Charan Singh was a scholar politician and this is what makes him special. Apart from this, he was also a skilled administrator. He was the main architect of the Zamindari Abolition Act and Land Reforms Act in Uttar Pradesh and he played a pivotal role in implementing it.
