The Times of India published an editorial titled ‘A Dangerous Agitation’ on April 14, 1984 that said, “Ch. Charan Singh with an eye on Jat vote in Haryana and Rajasthan is opposed to any concession to the Akali Dal”. In his sharp rebuttal to the Editor of the daily om April 19, Singh wrote that the former’s distasteful remarks have lowered the standard of public debate and that his reason for opposing Sikh extremism have got nothing to do with caste as alleged, and have been fully explained in his April, 1983 speech in the Lok Sabha.
