Jan Congress solidifies its ideological direction, Charan Singh writes the party’s first constitution

At this juncture, Charan Singh wrote the first constitution for the fledgling party, renamed Rashtriya Jan Congress. Now free of Congress factional disorder and bossism, Singh sought to center matters of the rural-agrarian based on the economic and philosophical models of Gandhi, eschewing all forms of “economic, political and social exploitation.” This draft constitution is a seminal work of political thinking that balances lofty ideals with practical politics, and gives us an early sense of his idea of how the nation should be run while prioritizing its policies in favour of the multitude of economic and social have-nots.
